The North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) is a standardized exam developed by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy (NABP) to assess a candidate's competence to practice pharmacy in the United States. Passing the NAPLEX is a key requirement for obtaining pharmacist licensure in most U.S. states.

Exam Overview

  • Format: Computer-based test administered at Pearson VUE centers.
  • Duration: 6 hours, including two optional 10-minute breaks.
  • Questions: 225 total; 200 scored and 25 unscored pretest questions.
  • Question Types: Multiple-choice, multiple-response, constructed-response (numeric entry), and ordered-response.
  • Navigation: Questions must be answered in order; you cannot skip or return to previous questions.

The NAPLEX assesses knowledge across five major content domains:

  3. Public Health
  4. Healthcare Information
  5. Patient Care

Scoring and Results

  • Scoring: Results are reported as "Pass" or "Fail."
  • Passing Standard: A scaled score of 75 or higher is required to pass.
  • Results Availability: Typically within 14 business days, accessible through your NABP e-Profile.
  • Retake Policy: If you fail, you must wait at least 45 days before retaking the exam. You are allowed up to 5 attempts, with a maximum of 3 attempts in a 12-month period.

  • Eligibility: Graduates from ACPE-accredited pharmacy programs or foreign-educated pharmacists with FPGEC certification.
  • Application Fee: $100 (eligibility application).
  • Exam Fee: $575 (as of 2024).
